Over 30 sq mi (7770 ha) of sand dunes are the centerpiece of Great Sand Dunes National Monument. These dunes, the highest elevation dunes in the United States, are flanked by the Rocky Mountains. In addition to sightseeing, these dunes offer excellent opportunities for hiking, camping and horseback riding.
San Isabel National Forest encompasses more than one-million acres of diverse lands, from jagged mountain peaks to grasslands. A range of activities are supported, including camping, hiking, fishing, mountaineering and rock climbing. Inside, find well-known peaks of Sawatch Range, the Spanish Peak and Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Colorado's highest mountain, Mt. Elbert, is also found in San Isabel.
